  1. Alarm systems and security measures fall into two categories, active and passive. A passive security system for example would be a security camera. You can go back and review what happened but it doesn’t actively protect you if something does happen.

Active measures would be your pit bull or you with a shotgun. Don’t get the pit bull if you think there are kids around. I’ve seen too many of them go bad and really hurt people.

Start out small with your security systems and do the obvious things like outdoor lighting. Motion sensor lights outside. An alarm system will scare away the majority of people. Put the bars on your windows on basement type windows where it isn’t going to affect your property value. Nobody wants to buy a house that has bars on the windows.

You are right about the shotgun, it’s the best home defense weapon. Here are some reviews of some home security systems – http://www.teepeetech.com/ .

Let’s talk prices. The shotgun you could buy used or new. I would buy used. They don’t break, the good ones rather. Check local classifieds. Buy a 12 guage, don’t get buckshot. You don’t want projectiles going through doors in your house. Buy a gun cabinet or lock if you can’t get a cabinet so that you can keep that gun safe from kids that might come over. Don’t leave it loaded. Some people I know like to leave the gun loaded if they need it, but in reality a criminal is going to wet his pants when he hears you rack one into the chamber. Budget $200 for the shotgun.

Camera system, you can go to costco and get one for $400 which comes with a bunch of cameras that hook up to your computer. For the night vision cameras though, they won’t see the best in the dark unless the subject is close. You can spend a lot on one or you could just add more lighting outside your house which would help some of the cameras. Be careful how you position the lights so you don’t blind your cameras.
